With football season kicking off this weekend, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite beers. While there is no such thing as a definitive list of the “best beers,” it couldn’t hurt to throw some recommendations out there.
Asking someone what exactly is the best beer is like asking them what the best color is, or what the best kind of car is…different strokes for different folks. Here, I present a list of good beers that are typically available at your local supermarket.

Now, Stella Artois is my personal go-to as far as beers go. It’s a Belgian classic, and it goes great in Snakebites.

Now, a Snakebite, by definition, is a lager layered on top of a cider. It is sometimes wrongly referred to as a “Black And Tan,” due to their similar appearance. Snakebites taste incredible, and make drinking hard cider a little bit more manly.
To properly layer the drink, all you need is the beer, a pint glass, and a spoon. Fill the pint glass halfway with cider. Hold the spoon so that the head is touching the surface of the cider, then carefully pour the beer so that the stream is landing on the head of the spoon, there by creating that layered appearance.
Not only can you use Stella, but Guinness is a very popular beer for making Snakebites. As far as cider goes, Wyder’s Pear Cider is usually widely available, but Blackthorn and Magner’s is even better.
For an extra dash of debonair, add a shot of Blackcurrant to make it even sweeter and more enjoyable. Done correctly, a Snakebite can taste like candy…and it looks damn cool.

On the topic of football season, Bud Light is making customizable “Fan Cans” available at TailgateApproved.com. You can special-order cans that have your favorite team colors. Personally, I’d have red cans with yellow accents to support the USC Trojans…or you could make me swallow my pride and force me to drink out of a blue and yellow can if you’re a UCLA Bruin fan. They also have a lot of other cool football stuff at the website.

Hoegaarden is a real tasty blonde witbier (wheat beer), and is a real nice alternative to the very popular Blue Moon and Pyramid Hefeweizen. The taste is a lot more subtle, and won’t wear out your taste buds the way that the wheat beers do.

Finally, I’ll close with Kirin Ichiban, which is an incredible Japanese beer. If you’re looking to branch out from the many popular domestic lagers and European imports, this is a great step in that direction.
So now you know what beers will set you apart from everyone else.
Stay classy.
