I’m fairly convinced that The Bloody Mary is popular Sunday morning/afternoon fare because people were out late partying the night before, and aren’t quite ready to let go of that spirit in the morning, despite the probable hangover.
If you can’t make it to your local restaurant to participate in Sunday brunch because you’re hosting your own festivities, then keep this drink in mind.
The reason that the Bloody Mary is great for hangovers is the inclusion of tomato juice and the optional celery garnish, which both introduce vitamins into your body…vitamins that your beaten body is probably aching for because your ex-girlfriend showed up to the party last night and you needed to take the edge off for the next month.
Also, in the likely event that you and your friends consumed all of the vodka the night prior, you can leave it out and you still have a perfectly fine hangover treat which will ease all the aching.
Now, everyone develops their own process for making this particular concoction. This is mine:
- Prepare a glass full of ice.
- Pour a shot of vodka into the glass.
- Add a pinch of horse radish.
- Drop a dash or two of Worcester Sauce into the mix.
- Add a drop of lemon juice.
- Fill the rest of the glass up with tomato juice, leaving less than a finger-width of space from the top.
- Dash some pepper on top.
- Add as many drops of hot sauce into the drink as you see fit.
- Pour the contents into another glass to mix the drink. Repeat.
- Pour the mixed drink into a glass with a salted rim.
- Drop in your celery stalk.
- Enjoy.
It might seem like a complex process, but it is well worth the reward of a classic concoction that slightly remedies your hangover. Some would tend to think that the hot sauce would bite back at your hangover…if you’re really feeling it, you could use all the leverage you can get.
If it all seems a bit much to take on, hop on over to Sunday brunch…or do it the Don Draper way and drop an alka-seltzer into a glass of water and hope for the best.
Stay classy.
